My Siberian Husky, Luna, turned two last week and I couldn’t let the day pass by without celebrating. We started the day with a “puppaccino” from Starbucks, followed by presents purchased from Chewy, and finally we ended with her very own cake. Last year I made peanut butter cupcakes for her birthday celebration, so this year I decided to take things a step further. My favorite flavor of cake is chocolate, and while dogs can’t enjoy the sweet treat, you can make chocolate treats for your pup using carob as a substitute. Today I’m sharing a recipe for chocolate cake for dogs using carob powder.

The cake is quite simple to make and only uses 8 ingredients. All the ingredients are combined into one bowl, making clean up a breeze. Most of the ingredients are items you most likely already have in your kitchen. It starts off with ingredients like an egg and vegetable oil, just like any human cake!

Like cocoa powder, carob is quite bitter and won’t taste good on its own. Pure cane sugar is not good for dogs, so to sweeten the cake I used peanut butter and honey. Both ingredients are safe for dogs and made for an extra yummy treat.

What Is Carob Powder?

Carob powder comes from ground up carob tree pods. It is higher in carbohydrates and lower in fats than cocoa. Unlike cocoa, carob does not contain theobromine, the chemical in cocoa that makes it toxic to dogs. The lack of theobromine in carob makes it a safe chocolate alternative for dog treats.

carob powder is a great chocolate substitute for dog friendly recipes

Carob can be used in all sorts of dog treats, such as dog friendly hot chocolate. You can buy carob in chips or powder form depending on what you’re making. For a chocolate cake for dogs, using carob powder is the best option.

Frosting

To frost the cake, I used plain cool whip. While not great for dogs, cool whip is safe for dogs to consume in moderation. As long as you aren’t allowing your dog to eat the whole cake in one sitting, cool whip is fine to use as a frosting.
