10 High Energy Dog Breeds for an Active Lifestyle

There are so many different dog breeds to choose from when adding a new furry friend to your family. It’s important that when you’re searching for the perfect pup, you consider your lifestyle and how a dog will fit in. If you consider yourself an active person, then a high energy and active dog will be perfect for you. Today I’m sharing 10 high energy dog breeds for active lifestyles.

Dalmatian

The Dalmatian is a high energy, active dog breed. They were originally bred to be guardians of horse drawn carriages and would trot next to the horse for it’s entire journey! They are perfect running companions and will also enjoy a long hike or swim!

Jack Russel Terrier

Anyone who has owned or worked with the Jack Russel Terrier (JRT) can confirm that they are a never ending ball of energy. JRT’s were originally bred for hunting and as a result are perfect dogs for an outdoorsy family. Don’t let their size fool you, if you want to welcome a Jack Russel  into your home, be prepared to spend plenty of time exercising them or they’re sure to get bored and cause trouble.

Siberian Husky

It’s common knowledge that the Siberian Husky is a working dog breed with tons of energy, bred for sled pulling and racing. These dogs can run for hours! They’re perfect running or hiking partners and will definitely want to spend lots of time outside, especially in the winter!

Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Corgis are a popular breed due to their short legs and fluffy booties but they actually aren’t the cuddly breed they appear to be! Corgis are herding dogs and have very similar energy levels to more well known active breeds such as the Australian Shepherd. These dogs need to be worked, a lot. Corgis are the perfect breed if you live on a farm or want to do agility. Contrary to popular belief, they do not make good apartment dogs due to their high energy levels.

Golden Retriever

Golden Retrievers are the best of both world, which is why they continue to be one of the most popular dog breeds in America. These awesome family dogs are bundles of energy and thrive in an environment where they get lots of walks, play time, and chances to swim. However, they’re just as happy to curl up on the couch after a day of play, making them the perfect dog breed for many people.

Border Collie

Like the Corgi, Border Collies were also bred to be herding dogs and as a result their prey drive and energy levels are incredibly high. These dogs are not good for lazy households and need lots of space to run. If you’re considering bringing a Border Collie into your family, be prepared to exercise them constantly or you’re sure to have an unruly pup on your hands.

Poodle

Standard, miniature, and toy poodles are all very smart and active dogs who require a lot of mental and physical exercise. They will thrive with any type of activity from brain games and food puzzles to long walks and swimming. They’re a great dog breed for agility training or service dog work due to their intelligence and energy levels.

Beagle

Beagles are curious and energetic pups who will do great in an active household. These dogs love to use their noses and are perfect hiking buddies.

German Shepherd

German Shepherds are stunning dogs that are used as police dogs for good reason. They were bred to work and need plenty of outlets to release their energy in order to thrive. Training, agility, hiking, and swimming should all be part of a German Shepherds life. They also need mental stimulation to keep their brain busy at all times.

English Springer Spaniel

English Springer Spaniels were bred for hunting and are therefore very active pups. These dogs are perfect for someone who spends tons of time outdoors, constantly exploring new places. They love to swim, run, walk and will jump at any opportunity to use their nose.
