Tips to Keep Your Dog Safe on Halloween

Tips to Keep Your Dog Safe on Halloween

Halloween is this weekend and I personally cannot wait for all the tricks and treats that are to come! While humans can enjoy the scary costumes and yummy candies that come along with the holiday, your pups won’t feel the same way. Follow these tips to keep your furry friends safe and healthy this spooky season!

1. Don’t Feed Your Pets Any Candy

This one should be obvious, but it’s definitely something to be mindful of on Halloween. Everyone knows that chocolate is toxic to dogs, but other candies can be too! Xylitol is a sugar substitute that is incredibly dangerous to your pets and could be found in many different types of candy. Keep track of where your trick or treat bowl is and make sure your dogs don’t have access to it. If you have kids in your home, make sure they know not to share their goodies with the pups!

2. Choose Costumes Wisely

Nothing is cuter than a dog in a costume, but make sure the costume is comfortable for your pup. If your pets costume restricts their vision or movement or is too tight around the neck, this could be potentially dangerous for them. Keep your dogs costume simple so that they’ll stay happy and if you notice them looking a bit uncomfortable, remove the costume immediately.

3. Watch Your Decor

Wires, cords, and open flames are an accident waiting to happen when it comes to our furry friends. Tape down any wires or cords that accompany your decor and consider a battery operated flame instead of a real one inside your jack-o-lanterns this year.

4. Keep Your Pets Indoors

Does your dog get super excited when the doorbell rings? Plenty of dogs do. If your dog can’t help but to bark at the door every time there’s a visitor, consider keeping them contained in a room far away from all the activity. This will be helpful for kids who may have a fear of dogs, or dogs that are scared of kids! Plus, with the door constantly opening and closing, it would be easy for your pup to escape in all the chaos.

5. Make Them Easily Identifiable

If you do want to take your furry friend out, and you know they’ll remain calm, make sure they’re easily identifiable. Consider getting them a reflective leash and harness to make it easy for everyone to see them. Also, make sure they have their ID tag on them with updated information in case they do manage to get away. If your pet isn’t very social, or good on a leash, leaving them inside is your best bet for keeping them safe all the way through November 1st.
