Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and if you’re anything like me the holiday is definitely more about chocolate for you than it is about love. Every year I look forward to enjoying all forms of this sweet treat, from assorted boxes of chocolate to my personal favorite, chocolate covered strawberries. I love making chocolate covered strawberries around this time of year so of course I had to come up with a dog safe version of the delicious dessert! Today, I’m sharing my recipe for dog friendly “chocolate” covered strawberries!

How to Make Dog Friendly “Chocolate” Covered Strawberries

It’s pretty common knowledge that chocolate is extremely toxic to dogs which may have you wondering how it’s at all possible to turn a chocolate covered fruit into a canine safe treat. Just like in my “chocolate” cake recipe for dogs or last years Valentine’s Day “chocolates” recipe, we’re going to be replacing the chocolate in this dessert with carob, a chocolate substitute.

While chocolate contains a chemical known as theobromine (which is what makes it toxic to dogs), carob does not, which makes it perfectly safe for canine consumption. Combining carob with other dog safe ingredients such as coconut oil, greek yogurt, and strawberries, allows you to make a perfectly safe version of chocolate covered strawberries for your dog!

The Recipe

Making dog friendly “chocolate” covered strawberries is just as simple as making the real deal for yourself!

To start, cut off the tops of your strawberries and then hollow out the middle. Next, put some plain greek yogurt in a piping bag and squeeze a bit into the hollowed out part of your berry. This is a fun little additive to your traditional chocolate strawberries!

Note: Be sure to use plain greek yogurt rather than flavored as the various flavored yogurts contain sugar and sometimes even xylitol which could be deadly to your dog.

After filling your strawberries, place them in the fridge for a few minutes while you prep your “chocolate”. To make the carob dip, you have two different options. Carob is sold in both a powder and a chip option. For this particular recipe, I would recommend the chips as they’re thicker and will give you a more “dipped” look. However, I already had the powder on hand it worked almost as well. For either version of the carob, you’re going to add it to some coconut oil and melt it until it’s completely liquid.

Once your dip is ready, take your strawberries out from the fridge and carefully dip each one until it’s coated in the carob. Then, place it back in the fridge to let it harden.

Finally, using the rest of your yogurt, create fun designs on the carob dipped strawberries for an extra fancy touch!

That’s it! This treat was so simple to make and came out super cute as well. These are perfect for a dog friendly Valentine’s Day party, a photoshoot, or even just for an extra special treat for your furry friend. As I always say, dogs should get to enjoy the holiday’s as well!
