Dog Breeds That Like to Swim: 10 Perfect Water Dogs

People often assume that all dogs are born knowing how to swim, or at least “doggy paddle”. This idea, however, is a myth. While many dogs enjoy diving into lakes or swimming laps in the pool, this is most certainly not the case for every dog breed. If you’re searching for the perfect swimming companion you’ll have to do extra research to ensure you choose a water loving pooch. Today I’m sharing 10 dog breeds that like to swim.

Note: Every dog is different and just because your dog was bred to swim doesn’t mean they will. Always introduce your dog to the pool slowly and never force them into the water. Before throwing your dog into a huge body of water, introduce them to a doggy pool or even a sprinkler. Forcing a dog to swim can cause them to panic which could result in severe injury or drowning.

Labrador Retriever

Labrador Retrievers don’t just enjoy the water, they were made for it. Labs were bred to retrieve ducks and fish from the water. Their slick, water resistant coat and webbed feet make them excellent swimmers. If you’re looking for a boat buddy or wave jumper the Labrador retriever may be the perfect breed for you.

Newfoundland

The Newfoundland, or “Newfie”, is among the top 10 dog breeds that like to swim. Newfoundland are huge and they are strong which made them excellent rescue dogs at one point in time. They were originally used to rescue people who were drowning, making them great dogs to have on hand at the pool.

Standard Poodle

Poodles don’t always have to be so prim and proper! These curly haired show dogs are also incredible swimmers!

English Setter

English Setters were made for the water! Literally. These energetic dogs were bred as bird hunting dogs and have a natural love for swimming. The English Setter is an incredibly active breed, and can benefit greatly from the exercise they’ll get from splashing in the pool.

Their name says it all, the Portugese Water Dog makes the list of dog breeds that like to swim. They were bred to herd fish into nets and retrieve broken fishing equipment. If you live along a lake or spend a lot of time at the beach, a PWD will make a great addition to your family.

Otterhound

Flat Coated Retriever

The Lagotto is a rare, Italian breed that enjoys a good swim. These dogs, like many others on the list, were bred to hunt waterfowl. Today they’re considered sporty dogs that enjoy any job they’re given.

Another dog bred for hunting, the Vizsla is a good choice if you’re looking for a water loving dog. These dogs are strong swimmers and even come equipped with webbed toes, making them naturals.

Golden Retriever

The list of dog breeds that like to swim wouldn’t be complete without the Golden Retriever. Goldens are one of the most popular breeds of dog in the US and for good reason. These versatile dogs make perfect playmates, snuggle buddies, and swimming companions. Goldens are high energy pups and swimming is the perfect way to tire them out.
