Road Trip Essentials for Traveling with Your Dog

Spring break is right around the corner and for many that means traveling! Thinking about bring your pup along with you for spring break vacation this year? Today I’m sharing with you 8 road trip essentials for traveling with your BFF (best furry friend). 

1. Portable Food and Water Bowls

Your dog is likely to get thirsty, and probably a little hungry, during your long trip. Collapsible bowls are perfect for traveling as they’re easy to clean and small enough to store without taking up a ton of room. Make sure you bring their food and some water for them as well, no use having bowls if you have nothing to fill them with!

2. Collar, Leash, and Harness

You’re probably going to have to make at least one, if not multiple, stops along the way to give your dog a chance to go to the bathroom and stretch their legs. Make sure you have a proper collar or harness and leash so that your pup isn’t able to get away from you in an unknown town!

3. First Aid Kit

Accidents happen! You’ll want to be prepared for any incidents that may occur by having a dog first aid kit on hand during your trip. Fill a small bag with some gauze, tweezers, a towel, Benadryl, hydrogen peroxide, ointment, and anything else you think might come in handy in case of an emergency. You should also have your pups most recent vet records on hand in case you have to take an emergency vet trip.

4. Proper Identification

Your dog should have a name tag attached to their collar at all times, but especially when you’re in a town they aren’t familiar with. If you don’t already have a name tag for your pup, you’ll want to get one to have on them during your trip. A name tag should have their name, your name, a good phone number, and your current address. It’s also a good idea to get your dog microchipped so that they still have a chance of finding their way back to you in the event that their name tag or collar goes missing. 

5. Poop Bags

Your dog is most likely going to need to relieve themself during your trip. Keep poop bags on you so that you’re able to clean up after them. Having paper towels on hand is also a good idea in case they have an accident in the car. 

6. Crate or Other Restraint

In many states it is a law that your dog has to be restrained in a moving vehicle! If your dog is crate trained and your car is big enough, having them crated throughout the duration of your trip is a good idea to keep them and everyone else safe. If a crate is not an option you can look into a seatbelt or car seat to keep them secure while you drive. 

7. Treats and Toys

Your dog is more than likely going to get bored after being stuck in the car for awhile. Bring some of their favorite toys and some yummy treats with you to keep them entertained! A frozen Kong or bully sticks are great options for treats that will keep them entertained for awhile.

8. Their Favorite Blanket or Comfort Item

Long car rides can be stressful, even for dogs! Bring a blanket or other comfort item that smells like home so that they’ll feel comforted during the journey.
