This month marks 5 years since I began working as an assistant for a holistic veterinarian. I went into the field knowing absolutely nothing about holistic veterinary medicine but feeling intrigued and excited to learn. I was surprised when I found out that there is a large group of people who have a very negative view on what holistic medicine really is. Many people hear the term “holistic” and automatically assume that means “anti-medicine”, which could not be further from the truth.
Holistic dog care isn’t about rejecting modern veterinary medicine, it’s about supporting your dogs whole body while making thoughtful and individualized decisions. Holistic vet care comes from the idea that when the body is properly supported, it has the ability to maintain balance and heal itself. Rather than focusing on only symptoms, holistic care looks at the whole dog.
If you’re new to the holistic approach, this guide will walk you through three foundational pillars: gut health and microbiome balance, nutrition as medicine, and immune system support. Understanding these three pillars will give you a better look into how holistic dog care works to support a healthier, happier dog.

Why Gut Health and Microbiome Balance Matter for Dogs
Would you be surprised to know that the gut plays a major role in nearly every system of the body? In dogs, approximately 70-80% of the immune system resides in the GI tract, making gut health a foundation of holistic veterinary medicine.
The canine gut microbiome is made up of trillions of beneficial bacteria that help regulate digestion, immune responses, and inflammation.
Signs of Poor Gut Health in Dogs
An imbalanced gut microbiome may contribute to:
- Chronic diarrhea or constipation
- Gas, bloating, or vomiting
- Food sensitivities and allergies
- Itchy skin or recurring ear infections
- Anxiety or behavioral changes
Holistic dog care focuses on restoring microbiome balance, rather than simply suppressing symptoms. In your typical vet clinic, if you bring your dog in for constant scratching or recurring hot spots you’re likely going to be prescribed a medication such as Apoquel or prednisone to help with the symptoms. While these medications work great for most dogs to stop the itching, they’re not actually taking care of the problem.

So how do we support the gut holistically? Pre and probiotics can be used to replenish and feed healthy microbes, aka, the healthy bacteria that the gut needs. Digestive enzymes can also be used when the body needs extra support breaking down food. But the number one thing to look at when it comes to balancing a gut microbiome is diet. Whole, digestible foods are required to help nourish beneficial bacteria.
Nutrition as Medicine: Feeding the Body to Heal
One of the most powerful tools in holistic dog care is nutrition as medicine. When you bring your dog to my vet clinic the very first question we ask you is: “What are they eating?”. Food provides more than calories, it delivers information to the body that influences inflammation, digestion, immunity, and longevity.

Challenges with Highly Processed Dog Foods
Many conventional diets contain:
- Low-quality protein sources
- Excess carbohydrates
- Artificial preservatives, colors, or flavoring
Over time, these ingredients stress the gut and contribute to chronic inflammation. That’s when we begin to see allergy symptoms such as hair loss and chronic ear infections, as well as other health issues such as: obesity, dental disease, and chronic diarrhea.
Like humans, dogs need high quality ingredients to maintain a healthy gut microbiome and immune system.
A Holistic Approach to Dog Nutrition Focuses On:
- Species appropriate diets focused on animal based proteins (dogs cannot be vegetarian!)
- Minimal processing to preserve nutrients
- Healthy fats, especially omega-3’s, to reduce inflammation
- Functional foods that support specific organs and systems
Now this isn’t to say that everyone must put their dog on a raw or home-cooked diet. There are plenty of high quality, commercial dog kibbles, canned foods, and fresh food diets on the market. Regardless of if you feed your dog raw, gently cooked, freeze-dried or kibble, the priority should be digestibility, nutrient density, and ingredient quality.
Always talk to your vet about what diet would be most suitable for your specific dog. All dogs are different and what works for one isn’t necessarily going to work for the next.
Food is often the first, and most impactful, place to create meaningful change in your dogs overall health and wellness.
Immune System Support: Promoting Balance, Not Overstimulation

Holistic veterinary medicine emphasizes immune balance rather than immune suppression or overstimulation. A balanced immune system can effectively respond to threats while tolerating harmless triggers such as food proteins or environmental allergies.
Dogs with immune imbalance may experience:
- Chronic allergies
- Autoimmune conditions
- Frequent infections
- Poor wound healing or recovery
Holistic Immune Support for Dogs Includes:
- Adequate vitamins, minerals, and amino acids
- Reducing immune triggers such as poor quality diets and toxic exposures
- Targeted supplementation like omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants
- Supporting gut health, which plays a direct role in immune regulation
Rather than prescribing medications to cover up symptoms, holistic care works to strengthen the body’s natural defenses so the immune system can function appropriately.
Note: This does not mean that we never vaccinate or prescribe medications in holistic veterinary medicine. It means that we are mindful of only doing what is necessary for the safety and comfortability of our patients, while helping to strengthen the body to be able to fight off illnesses on it’s own. Both medications and vaccines are important and safe and should be used when necessary.
How Gut Health, Nutrition, and Immunity Are Connected

These pillars of holistic dog care are deeply intertwined:
- Proper nutrition feeds the gut microbiome
- A balanced microbiome trains and regulates the immune system
- A stable immune system reduces inflammation and disease risk
When one area improves, the others often follow. This interconnected approach is why holistic veterinary medicine rarely relies on a single supplement or treatment – it focuses on total body balance.
Holistic dog care isn’t about rejecting conventional medicine. It’s about making informed, intentional choices that support your dog’s natural ability to thrive.
By prioritizing gut health, immune balance, and nutrition as medicine, you create a strong foundation for a healthier, happier life that will support your dog for years to come.
Small changes make a big difference over time.
