10 Uncommon Giant Dog Breeds

The phrase “bigger is better” isn’t always true, but for a lot of people, it is true when it comes to dog breeds. While some people prefer a small or toy breed, others want a giant canine companion. If you’re hoping to bring home a dog larger than some people, you’re in the right place. Today, I’m sharing 10 uncommon giant dog breeds.

1. Armenian Gampr

The Armenian Gampr is a giant breed weighing in at 90-200 pounds and standing as much as 35 inches tall. This breed was bred and is still commonly used as livestock guardians. They’re strong willed and independent dogs with a strong guard drive so they may not be the best choice for those just looking for a pet.

2. Bouvier des Flandres

Bouvier des Flandres are quite large, weighing as much as 110 pounds and standing as tall as Ir27.5 inches. They are a working breed and do well in homes with large yards and plenty of frequent exercise. They tend to be good with children and other dogs making them good pets. 

3. Central Asian Shepherd Dog

Like many other giant dog breeds, the Central Asian Shepherd Dog was bred to guard livestock. This breed can weigh as much as 110 pounds and stand as high as 27.5 inches. They’re good family dogs but aren’t always the best with strangers. 

4. Dogo Argentino

The Dogo Argentino is a hunting breed that can weigh as much as 80-100 pounds. These dogs make great family dogs as they’re affectionate, good with children, and very eager to please. Because of they’re hunting background they are incredibly athletic jobs and do best in a home where they have frequent physical and mental stimulation. 

5. Irish Wolfhound

Irish Wolfhounds are the tallest of all the AKC recognized breeds. Males can be as tall as 3 feet at the shoulder and weigh as much as 180 pounds. The Irish Wolfhound is a fantastic family dog, they’re calm, loyal, and good with children and other dogs. One downside to this breed is their short life expectancy, most Irish Wolfhounds only live 6-8 years. 

6. Komondor

The Komondor is commonly known as a “mop dog” because of the long cords that cover them from head to toe. These dogs were bred as flock guardians and can weigh over 100 pounds. They’re affectionate and loving dogs but also possess watch dog traits. Due to their unique coat, they require quite a bit of grooming. 

7. Neapolitan Mastiff

The Neapolitan Mastiff sets itself apart from the traditional Mastiff as they are much more strong willed and watchful. These dogs were bred to be guard dogs and they do just that. They can weigh as much as 150 pounds and aren’t afraid to protect their family and property. 

8. Otterhound

Otterhounds were bred for, well, otter hunting. These dogs, which originate in England, are an awesome choice if you’re looking for a dog who loves to swim. They’re great family dogs, easy to train, and eager to please! They’re perfect dogs for families who enjoy outdoor activities such as swimming and hiking. They weigh in at about 80-115 pounds and stand at around 27 inches tall. 

9. Scottish Deerhound

The Scottish Deerhound largely resembles the Irish Wolfhound and they have similar temperaments as well. Although the Scottish Deerhound is smaller, weighing in at a maximum weight of 110 pounds, and are actually derived from Greyhounds. These dogs love their families and make great pets. 

10. Tibetan Mastiff

Tibetan Mastiffs are very large dogs, weighing in at up to 150 pounds. These dogs are the ultimate guard dog and will be very protective of their family and property. They do make good family dogs as they’re affectionate and good with children. They’ll do best in a home where they have some kind of job or mental stimulation.
