Jump to RecipeIt has been incredibly hot here the last few days in Virginia, (I’m talking 100 degrees by 11am hot), and it has been miserable. Whenever that summer heat starts to get to me, my favorite way to cool down is with an ice cold frozen treat. Of course, I couldn’t enjoy a popsicle without sharing one with my Siberian Husky, Luna. Human popsicles are full of sugar and other ingredients that aren’t great for our furry friends but luckily, making dog friendly popsicles is a breeze! Today, I’m sharing my recipe for tropical pupsicles for dogs!
How to Make Dog Friendly Popsicles
Dog friendly popsicles are one of my favorite homemade dog treats to make because they are just so simple! All you need is any variety of dog safe fruits, a base such as greek yogurt or coconut milk, and a silicone tray mold to freeze them in!
Since dogs can safely eat most fruits, the options are endless when it comes to dog safe popsicle recipes. You really have the opportunity to experiment and find out what your dogs favorite fruity flavors are! Making popsicles for your dog is also a great way to get some extra nutrients into their diet. Fruit is chocked full of essential nutrients, not just for humans but for our dogs too.
The Ingredients
To make the tropical pupsicles for your dog, you’re only going to need 3 ingredients:
- Cantaloupe
- Pineapple
- Unsweetened Coconut Milk
On their own, these ingredients all have vitamins and minerals that are great additions to your dogs diet and together they make a deliciously sweet summer treat!
Cantaloupe
Cantaloupe is high in fiber, vitamin B6, vitamin C, potassium and more! It’s also low in calories which makes it a great treat option for overweight pups. It’s high water content makes it an excellent treat for summer when our pets are much more likely to need some extra hydration.
Pineapple
Pineapple is a super food in not just our diet, but our dogs as well. The sweet and tangy fruit is full of vitamin c and minerals such as calcium and magnesium, all of which is essential for a dog to have a healthy immune system and digestive track.
Coconut Milk
Coconuts are full of nutrients that will help boost your dogs immune system. The high fat content is great for a healthy skin and coat and coconut is even great for freshening doggy breath! However, it’s important that when you feed coconut to your dog you don’t choose any product with added sugars as too much sugar is not good for a dogs diet. Unsweetened coconut milk or coconut water is the best way to get some coconut into your pups system.
How to Make Tropical Pupsicles for Dogs
To make these tropical dog friendly pupsicles, simply cut up your cantaloupe and pineapple and add it to a blender along with the coconut milk. There’s no need for exact measurements in this recipe, just add the amount that you feel is right.
Once blended, pour the mixture into silicone trays and place them in the freezer for several hours or overnight. When they’re completely frozen you can pop them out and give your dog a delicious cooling treat!
If you have any mixture left over in the end you can use it as a topping for your dogs lick mat, or even just pour it in a bowl and let them lap it up!
